Certified Family Law Specialist
Extensive CPA experience
The Law Offices of Kenneth U. Reyes, P.C. devotes its practice to the complex area of Family Law. Mr. Reyes is one of the few attorneys in California that is both a Certified Family Law Specialist (CFLS) by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization and a CPA (inactive) with extensive Certified Public Accounting experience in California. A Certified Family Law Specialist is more than just an attorney that specializes in family law. A California attorney who is certified by the State Bar as a Family Law Specialist must have taken and passed a written examination in family law; demonstrated a high level of experience in family law; fulfilled ongoing education requirement; been favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with her or his work. In addition, Mr. Reyes' CPA experience serves as a strategic advantage in complex high net worth family law cases involving the characterization , valuation and division of community property as well as its tax consequences. To be a CPA, one has to pass the rigorous 3 day CPA exam and satisfy the auditing and public accounting experience requirement of the California Board of Accountancy. Our firm focuses its practice to that highly specialized area of law in order to provide quality legal representation. Our philosophy is to seek out the most efficient and cost effective strategy to resolve our client's dispute and legal problems without compromising their interest.
The firm's family law practice handles the full spectrum of complex cases involving major issues such as divorce, division and valuation of marital and non-marital properties, annulment, legal separation, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, and domestic violence. The CPA and financial background of the firm's attorneys gives the firm a leading edge over non-financial savvy opposing counsels in divorce cases involving high net worth individuals. Whether it be individuals that own significant real estate holdings, businesses, professional practice, retirement plans, our firm is highly competent to deal with complex financial issues.
The firm is also understanding of the financial constraints that clients may encounter during a divorce, annulment, or legal separation. One common problem is when one spouse is the breadwinner and controls the majority of the community assets while the other spouse has no access to the community's financial resources. Another common problem is where the community is short in liquidity necessary to finance the litigation such as most of the assets are tied down in real estate or retirement plans. In both situations, a party's representation could be compromised by their inability to afford competent representation. Our firm evaluate the client financial situation and, on a case by case basis, will take on the representation despite the above problem either by requesting an attorneys fee award against the other side or by taking the case on a FLARPL (Family Law Attorneys Real Property Lien) if there is community real property with sufficient equity.
